Air Compressor Requirements for Dry Ice Blasting: CFM, PSI and Air Quality
How to Choose an Air Compressor for a Dry Ice Blaster
Dry ice blasting performance depends heavily on compressed air. The most important rule is simple: match the compressor to the blaster using sustained CFM at the required PSI. Horsepower and tank size can be useful context, but neither one proves compatibility on its own.
Why CFM and PSI Must Be Checked Together
PSI describes pressure. CFM describes airflow volume. A compressor can reach the target pressure but still fail to sustain enough airflow once the blasting trigger is held. This can reduce pellet velocity and cleaning consistency.
If you are specifically comparing airflow demand, see how much CFM a dry ice blaster needs and why one setup may run near 80–120 CFM while another needs 200+ CFM.
AIOLITH Model-Specific Air Requirements
| Model | Pressure | Airflow | Practical Guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI30 | 87–116 PSI | 71–141 CFM machine demand | Indoor/fixed: 80+ CFM practical minimum; 90–120 CFM recommended. Outdoor/mobile: 125 CFM @ 125 PSI minimum compressor reference; 185 CFM @ 125 PSI recommended. |
| AI30 Plus | 87–116 PSI | 71–141 CFM machine demand | Indoor/fixed: 90+ CFM minimum with extra airflow reserve preferred. Outdoor/mobile: 185 CFM @ 125 PSI minimum; 185–250 CFM @ 125 PSI recommended. |
| AI50 | 116–232 PSI | 175 CFM minimum; 200–400 CFM recommended | Size the compressor by sustained CFM at the required PSI; 175 CFM is the minimum and 200–400 CFM is recommended for stronger, more stable industrial blasting. |
Why Horsepower Alone Is Misleading
Two compressors with the same horsepower can deliver very different CFM depending on design, pressure setting and efficiency. For example, the AIOLITH AR10 is a 10 HP compressor but its delivered airflow is below the AI30’s practical minimum. It should therefore not be treated as an AI30-compatible solution simply because it is rated at 10 HP.
AIOLITH AR20V and AI30
The AR20V is a 20 HP VFD rotary screw compressor rated at approximately 91 CFM. Where voltage, pressure, air treatment and the rest of the installation are suitable, that airflow places it within the regular indoor target range for the AI30. It is not an AI50 air solution.
Outdoor / Mobile Air Supply
Outdoor work often uses diesel portable compressors because they can provide continuous high airflow without relying on facility power. For the AI30, the current outdoor/mobile compressor reference is 125 CFM @ 125 PSI minimum and 185 CFM @ 125 PSI recommended. For the AI30 Plus, the current outdoor/mobile reference is 185 CFM @ 125 PSI minimum and 185–250 CFM @ 125 PSI recommended, reflecting the additional pressure loss and airflow reserve associated with the extended 26 ft hose.
These are compressor-output references, not instructions to set the blaster inlet to 125 PSI. Regulate the AI30 and AI30 Plus inlet within the machines’ specified 87–116 PSI working range and provide clean, dry air.
Air Quality Matters
Compressed air should be dry and clean. Moisture can freeze when it contacts dry ice, contributing to clumping and unstable feed. Depending on the compressor and environment, use:
- Refrigerated air dryer
- Aftercooler
- Moisture separator
- Appropriate filtration
Hose and Connector Considerations
Long or undersized air hoses and restrictive couplings can reduce delivered airflow. Keep the air path appropriately sized and as direct as practical. Confirm the compressor rating at the actual working pressure rather than relying on a peak or unloaded specification.
Quick Buying Checklist
- What CFM does the compressor deliver at the required PSI?
- Is that value continuous-duty or only a peak rating?
- Is the air dry and clean?
- What hose diameter and length will be used?
- Will other pneumatic equipment share the same air supply?
- Does the electrical supply match the compressor?
Bottom Line
For dry ice blasting, start with CFM + PSI + air quality. Do not recommend a compressor from horsepower alone. Check the AIOLITH Air Compressor Guide or send your compressor specifications to sales@aiolith.com before ordering.
Next Step: Build the Air System Around Your Blaster
If you already own or plan to buy an AI30, compare the AR20V 20HP VFD compressor with your required duty cycle and available electrical service. If you want a matched package instead of sourcing components separately, review the AI30 + 20HP compressor complete system.
