The Definitive Air Compressor Guide for Dry Ice Blasters

Match your AI30, AI30 Plus, or AI50 with the right air compressor — CFM, PSI, and buy-or-rent options in one place.

Find your compressor match

First, the Two Numbers That Matter:
PSI & CFM

In dry ice blasting, compressed air is the engine that drives the CO₂ pellets. Get these two right and cleaning is fast and consistent. Get them wrong and you lose power — no matter how good the blaster is.

PSI

Air Pressure

PSI is the force behind each pellet. Higher pressure hits harder — essential for stubborn grease, coatings, and rust. Most cleaning runs at 87–150 PSI, depending on the machine.

CFM

Air Volume

CFM is how much air the compressor delivers. Dry ice blasters are air-hungry — too little CFM and the machine starves and cleans slowly. This is the number people get wrong most.

How Much Air Each Machine Needs

Start here: every AIOLITH blaster has its own air demand. Once you know your machine's numbers, use the calculator below to match it to the right compressor.

AI30

Auto detailing, mold remediation, and general cleaning.

Air volume71–141 CFM
Pressure87–116 PSI
Hopper44 lb (20 kg)
Ice output0.66–1.32 lb/min
Hose13 ft standard

AI30 Plus

Same core machine with a 26 ft hose for larger areas.

Air volume71–141 CFM
Pressure87–116 PSI
Hopper44 lb (20 kg)
Ice output0.66–1.32 lb/min
Hose26 ft extended

AI50

Industrial, abrasive-ready, heavy grease & coatings.

Air volume≥175 CFM
Pressure≥116 PSI
Hopper55 lb (25 kg)
Ice outputup to 5.5 lb/min
AbrasiveYes (abrasive-ready)

Screw, Diesel, or Piston?

Three compressor types, three very different results. Here's which one belongs on your job — and the one to avoid.

Rotary Screw
(Electric)

✓ Best for indoor

Best for

Workshops, factories, food & pharma plants with grid power.

Airflow

Stable, continuous, and quiet — built to run all day.

Dry ice

Clean, dry air out of the box. Pair with a large tank.

Diesel Towable

✓ Best for outdoor

Best for

Field work, remote & mobile sites — no power supply needed.

Airflow

High output, fully portable. The 185 CFM class is the standard.

⚠ Dry ice

Hot, humid air — aftercooler + dryer required to keep pellets intact.

Piston /
Reciprocating

✕ Not recommended

Best for

Hobby use and light air tools only — not blasting.

Airflow

Can't sustain the CFM a dry ice blaster demands.

Dry ice

Pressure drops, freezes the hopper, and jams the feed.

Buy or Rent Your Compressor?

Both work. It comes down to how often you'll run your blaster.

Buy

Best for regular & long-term use
