Dry Ice Engine Cleaning: Benefits, Limits and Compressor Requirements
Why Use Dry Ice for Engine Cleaning?
Dry ice blasting can remove grease, road grime, adhesives and carbon buildup without adding liquid water. It is useful for detailing and restoration when the surface and contamination are suitable.
AI30 Reference
AIOLITH AI30: $3,099; 44 lb (20 kg) hopper; 0.66–1.32 lb/min output; 3 mm or smaller pellets; 87–116 PSI; 71–141 CFM machine air demand.
Air Supply
For regular indoor professional use, about 80 CFM is a practical minimum and 90–120 CFM at about 100 PSI is recommended. Use dry, clean compressed air.
What It Does Well
- Grease and oil
- Road residue
- Adhesive buildup
- Carbon and loose contamination
What It Does Not Do
Pure dry ice blasting is not an abrasive process for deeply pitted structural rust or surface profiling. It may expose corrosion for inspection rather than remove the corrosion itself.
Safety
Place the vehicle and electrical systems in a safe service condition, test sensitive materials and provide ventilation and PPE for CO₂ and dislodged debris.
