Walk-Behind Floor Cleaning Machines: 12 Factors to Compare Before Buying

Walk-Behind Floor Cleaning Machines: 12 Things to Compare

A walk-behind floor scrubber is an operator-driven machine that combines solution application, mechanical scrubbing and dirty-water recovery on compatible hard floors. Some models require the operator to push the machine, while self-propelled models use powered traction to reduce pushing effort.

Current AIOLITH walk-behind options are AF2013 and AF2217. Neither should be described as autonomous or hands-free.

1. Operating Format

AF2013: walk-behind.

AF2217: self-propelled walk-behind with powered traction. The operator still walks behind and controls the machine.

2. Working Width

AF2013 has a 20-inch working width. AF2217 has a 22-inch working width. Wider coverage can reduce passes on open routes, but complete machine dimensions, doors, turns and storage also matter.

3. Tank Capacity

AF2013 uses 11-gallon solution / 13-gallon recovery tanks. AF2217 uses 16-gallon solution / 17-gallon recovery tanks. Larger tanks may reduce refill and drain interruptions, but add size and operating weight.

4. Brush Pressure

AF2013 is specified at 66 lb brush pressure. AF2217 is specified at 88 lb. More pressure is not automatically better; match the floor, finish, brush or pad, chemistry and soil.

5. Published Productivity

AF2013 is rated up to 34,000 ft²/h. AF2217 is rated up to 38,000 ft²/h. These are published maxima, not guaranteed route results. Turns, obstacles, overlap, pre-sweeping, refills and dumping affect real productivity.

6. Runtime

AF2013 is published with up to 5 hours of runtime. AF2217 is published with up to 4 hours. Actual runtime varies with floor resistance, brush load, vacuum use, battery condition, temperature and operating pattern.

7. Battery and Cycle Specification

Both current models use 24V 100Ah lithium battery systems specified for 5,000+ charge cycles. Current product information supports opportunity charging.

Do not convert the cycle specification into a guaranteed number of calendar years. Battery life depends on charging, depth of discharge, temperature, storage, workload and condition.

8. Noise

AF2013 is currently specified at <70 dB. The current AF2217 PDP does not publish a specific numeric noise value. Do not apply AF2013’s figure to AF2217.

9. Water and Chemical Use

Water and detergent use depend on solution-flow settings, floor, soil, route and operator procedure. Current AIOLITH product information does not support a universal eco-mode, smart water-saving system, automatic detergent dosing or smart chemical dispenser claim for these models.

10. Operator Controls and Training

Current product information supports straightforward controls intended to reduce operator training time, but it does not establish “no training required,” one-touch automation, digital dashboards, LED alert systems, adjustable padded handles, cup holders or phone holders as universal AF2013/AF2217 features.

Operators should review the current manual, machine controls, brush or pad setup, solution handling, route hazards, charging and after-use care before routine use.

11. Current Applications

AF2013

Current PDP applications include retail stores, schools and universities, offices and commercial buildings, clinics and healthcare facilities, hotels and hospitality facilities, and small warehouses.

AF2217

Current PDP applications include warehouses, schools and universities, hospitals and healthcare facilities, supermarkets and shopping centers, commercial buildings, and distribution centers.

Facility type alone does not determine model fit. Measure route size, doors, aisles, turns, obstacles, floor compatibility and operator workload.

12. Maintenance, Support and Total Cost

Follow the exact model manual for tanks, brush or pad, squeegee, hoses, filters, battery and charger. Do not use a universal daily/weekly/monthly replacement schedule or claim minimal repairs without evidence.

For warranty, parts, training and support, review the current written terms rather than assuming free training, fixed coverage or permanent parts availability.

Compare current purchase price, freight, labor, water, chemicals, consumables, charging, maintenance, parts, downtime and storage when evaluating value.

AF2013 vs. AF2217 at a Glance

Specification AF2013 AF2217
Format Walk-behind Self-propelled walk-behind
Working width 20 in 22 in
Tanks 11 / 13 gal 16 / 17 gal
Brush pressure 66 lb 88 lb
Published productivity Up to 34,000 ft²/h Up to 38,000 ft²/h
Runtime Up to 5 h Up to 4 h
Battery 24V 100Ah lithium 24V 100Ah lithium
Charge cycles 5,000+ 5,000+
Noise <70 dB Exact numeric value not listed on current PDP

Conclusion

Choose between AF2013 and AF2217 from verified working width, tanks, traction, brush pressure, runtime, published productivity, route geometry and operator workload. AF2217’s self-propelled traction is the key operating difference for longer routes; it should not be confused with autonomous operation.
