Pads for Floor Cleaning Machines: Guide to Choosing the Right Floor Pad
Floor Cleaning Pads: Choose by Task, Machine, and Floor

Floor pads are used with compatible automatic scrubbers, rotary floor machines, buffers, and polishers for tasks such as routine cleaning, light scrubbing, stripping, buffing, and polishing. The correct pad depends on the machine, pad diameter, pad driver, operating speed, floor or finish, cleaning chemistry, and intended task.
Pad color is a useful product identifier, but color conventions are not a universal technical standard across every manufacturer. Always use the pad manufacturer’s description and the machine and flooring manufacturers’ guidance.
Current AIOLITH Pad Functions
For the current AIOLITH red, black, and white commercial floor-pad range:
| Pad | Current AIOLITH Positioning | Use Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Routine cleaning, spray buffing, and light scrubbing | For suitable finished hard floors when more cleaning action than a white pad is needed but aggressive finish removal is not appropriate |
| Black | Aggressive wet stripping and finish removal | Use only on suitable hard floors with compatible equipment and stripping chemistry; test first |
| White | Light polishing and buffing | Low-aggression pad for clean, finished hard floors; not intended for aggressive scrubbing or stripping |
These descriptions apply to the current AIOLITH products. Do not assume another brand uses exactly the same color/function system.
Pad Size and Current AIOLITH Machine Compatibility
| Machine | Pad Driver | Current Pad Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| AIOLITH AF2013 | 19-inch pad driver | 20-inch floor pads |
| AIOLITH AF2217 | 21-inch pad driver | 22-inch floor pads |
| AIOLITH AF2225 | 21-inch pad driver | 22-inch floor pads |
Current AIOLITH red, black, and white pads are standard-diameter replacement pads rather than proprietary machine-only parts. Compatibility with another machine depends on the required pad diameter, pad driver, operating speed, floor type, and cleaning task.
Do Not Choose a Pad by Diameter Alone
A pad that physically fits can still be inappropriate for the floor, finish, chemistry, or machine speed. Confirm:
- Required pad diameter and pad-driver fit
- Machine operating speed and manufacturer-approved pad type
- Floor and finish manufacturer guidance
- Whether the task is routine cleaning, stripping, buffing, or polishing
- Cleaning or stripping chemical compatibility
- Floor condition and any sensitive coatings
Color Is Not a Universal Grit Rating
Do not convert pad colors into fixed abrasive-grit numbers such as “20–36 grit” or “800+ grit” unless the exact pad manufacturer publishes that specification. Nonwoven floor pads and diamond-abrasive systems are different products, and their aggressiveness cannot be reliably compared using one universal color-to-grit table.
Floor Compatibility Requires More Than a Color Chart
VCT, vinyl, terrazzo, concrete, epoxy, natural stone, sealed wood, and specialty finishes have different maintenance requirements. A generic statement such as “use a red or white pad on hardwood” is not enough to establish compatibility.
For sensitive floors such as natural stone or wood, verify the exact pad, machine, pressure, speed, water use, and chemistry with the flooring or finish manufacturer and test an inconspicuous area first.
Machine Speed Matters
Low-speed rotary machines, automatic scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, and orbital machines can require different pad constructions. Do not use one fixed RPM range for an entire pad color category unless the exact pad documentation supports it. Follow the machine and pad manufacturers’ operating-speed limits.
Chemistry and Cleaning Objective
The pad is only one part of the process. Cleaning results depend on soil, chemistry, dilution, dwell time, solution flow, pad pressure, machine speed, travel speed, and floor condition. Black stripping pads should be used only with a floor and finish that are intended to be stripped and with compatible stripping chemistry.
Likewise, a white polishing pad cannot restore every damaged or etched finish, and a red maintenance pad does not guarantee removal of every stain or scuff.
Cleaning, Inspection, and Replacement
Inspect pads before and after use. Clean them according to the pad manufacturer’s instructions and allow them to dry appropriately before storage.
Current AIOLITH pad pages recommend replacing a pad when it becomes thin, glazed, uneven, heavily loaded with soil, damaged, or no longer performs consistently. Replacement should be based on condition and performance rather than a fixed calendar interval or universal number of operating hours.
Environmental Claims
A pad should not automatically be described as recyclable, reusable, water-only, chemical-free, LEED-supporting, Green Seal compliant, or environmentally preferable unless those claims are documented for the exact product and cleaning process.
Quick Selection Checklist
- Confirm machine model and pad-driver size.
- Confirm the required pad diameter.
- Identify the floor and finish.
- Choose the pad for the actual cleaning task.
- Check machine speed and pressure compatibility.
- Confirm approved cleaning or stripping chemistry.
- Test sensitive floors before full-area use.
- Replace pads based on wear and performance.
Conclusion
The best floor pad is the one that matches the complete cleaning setup—not simply a color. For current AIOLITH products, red is positioned for routine cleaning/light scrubbing, black for heavy wet stripping, and white for low-aggression polishing. Always confirm diameter, pad driver, machine speed, floor and finish, chemistry, and the intended task before use.
