Benefits of Dry Ice Blasting: 7 Practical Advantages and Limits

Why Industrial Teams Use Dry Ice Blasting

Aiolith AI30 dry ice blasting machine

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air and solid CO₂ pellets to remove contamination. The pellets sublimate after impact, so the dry ice itself does not leave spent blasting media or liquid water behind.

1. Dry Cleaning

No liquid water is added by the blasting media, which can be useful around machinery and other equipment where post-wash drying is undesirable.

2. Generally Non-Abrasive

Pure dry ice blasting is generally non-abrasive. It is useful for contamination removal where the goal is to preserve the underlying surface rather than create a new surface profile.

3. Less Secondary Media Cleanup

The dry ice converts into gas, leaving the removed contaminant but no spent dry ice media to collect.

4. Reduced Dependence on Cleaning Solvents

For suitable grease, adhesive, carbon and production-residue applications, dry ice blasting can reduce the need for solvent-based cleaning steps.

5. Access to Complex Geometry

Different nozzle shapes can reach seams, corners, molds, tooling and machinery areas that are difficult to scrub manually.

6. Useful for De-Energized Electrical Equipment

Dry ice is non-conductive, but electrical equipment should still be properly de-energized before cleaning. Follow applicable lockout/tagout and site safety procedures.

7. Broad Industrial Application Range

Common applications include automotive restoration, molds, printing and packaging equipment, food-processing machinery and general industrial maintenance.

AI30 Reference

The AIOLITH AI30 has a 44 lb (20 kg) hopper, 0.66–1.32 lb/min dry ice output, 87–116 PSI operating pressure and 71–141 CFM machine air demand. It is designed for 3 mm or smaller dry ice pellets and is not abrasive-ready.

Important Limitation

Pure dry ice blasting is not designed for deeply pitted structural rust or aggressive surface profiling. Use a suitable abrasive process or an abrasive-ready system when material removal is required.

Safety

Provide adequate ventilation because dry ice becomes CO₂ gas during use. Use appropriate PPE and follow the equipment manual and site procedures.
