Dry Ice Media Blasting: Benefits, Applications and the Difference From Abrasive Media
What Is Dry Ice Media Blasting?
Dry ice blasting uses solid CO₂ pellets as the cleaning media. Unlike sand, grit or other abrasive media, the dry ice sublimates after impact.
Dry Ice vs Abrasive Media
Pure dry ice blasting is generally non-abrasive and is used mainly for contamination removal. Abrasive blasting intentionally removes material and can create a surface profile. These processes should not be treated as interchangeable.
Common Dry Ice Applications
- Grease and oil removal
- Adhesive and carbon buildup
- Molds and tooling
- Printing and packaging equipment
- Automotive restoration
AI30 Is Dry-Ice-Only
The AIOLITH AI30 and AI30 Plus are designed for dry ice pellets only. Do not add sand, glass beads, walnut shells or other abrasives. Buyers who need abrasive capability should evaluate the AI50.
AI30 Air Supply
AI30 operates at 87–116 PSI with 71–141 CFM machine air demand. About 80 CFM is a practical indoor minimum and 90–120 CFM is recommended for regular use.
Bottom Line
Choose pure dry ice blasting when contamination removal and reduced secondary media matter. Choose an abrasive process when the job requires material removal or surface profiling.
